Sleeping pills block the activity of a neurotransmitter known as GABA which is the one responsible for regulating sleep. GABA can be blocked to ensure that the brain is functioning normal during sleep. This results in more REM (rapid eyes movement) and better sleeping overall. People who have difficulty falling asleep or have trouble getting to sleep are usually prescribed sleeping pills.
